They then came up the Mississippi to Alton, Illinois and stayed in Madison County where he mined coal. George ,Helena and son Leo then moved to Piasa Township, Jersey,County, Illinois and bought 80 acres from which he cleared and farmed. Later he brought 80 more acres making a total of 160 acres. They built a small log house on the homestead and later built a 2 story brick house. After George died his son Leo took over the farm. A few years ago half the farm was sold and the house burned down, but 80 acres of the land is still own by a Springman. George died in January 7,1897 and is buried in St. Alphonsus Church Cemetery. Helena died October 18,1895 and is buried in St.Alphonsus Church Cemetery.
